Is Your ‘Story’ Preventing You From Achieving Your Dream Body?
If you feel like you’re stuck in a groundhog day, where you can’t seem to change your physique seeming to just throw everything at it day-by-day and workout-by-workout with little to no real change, then this article is critical for you.
Chances are you might need a complete mindset readjustment … Bear with me whilst I explain, and share my personal story as a case study.
Did you know, your thoughts and opinions (your story) are a reflection of your past experiences. Problem is, they might NOT be right!
That’s why you are where you are today, after all.
The problem: Your ego will defend your story to the death. Any chance that you might face embarrassment or a loss in social stature your ego will jump out and defend you.
If you can’t identify when you’re making decisions using your ego instead of your intellect you’ll be completely disempowered and your ability to lose weight, gain muscle or achieve success in life will diminish.
The job of an ego is to defend you from pain. And worse, ego’s love to communicate with one another and especially love confrontation. They will try to draw other ego’s out to fight!
Often the very thing that you’re trying to numb is the very thing that is trying to drive you forward!
Pain motivates.
Here’s a quick guide to identifying actions based on ego. If you realise that you’re doing any of the following STOP, retract your statement and allow yourself to calm down to a centred, non-reactive state of mind.
Symptoms of ego are:
Distraction
Justification
Defence
Comparison
Distortion
Denial
Deflection
Demonstration
If you’re like me when I first studied this concept I was totally in denial (Ego symptom ‘6’). Then that emotion eventually turned to complete disbelief as I realised I literally lived by the hand of my ego day-to-day.
As I learned more I quickly became aware that my ego had severely prevented me from achieving my life goals.
Ouch! that hurt …
You’ll probably be surprised to know that I used to be VERY skinny. In fact, I weighed under 70kg all of my adolescent and early 20’s. No matter how hard I trained, rep-after-rep, I failed to gain muscle or put on any size.
My god, the frustration! I felt like I got EVERYTHING right, and I’d just get leaner, and skinnier.
young-yani-burmeister-before-and-afterJust look at these photos. The left pic is me at 15 years old on a beach near Coffs Harbour where we grew up. The middle pic is me in my final year at high school (looking at this after it was taken I realised I was one skinny dude!) and the pic on the right is me now.
Shortly after I made the commitment to grow. I joined a weights gym for the first time.
Ego had me convinced that because of my genetics, I could never gain muscle. I walked around for almost 10 years telling myself and everyone else that story.
To add fuel to that fire I had also somehow convinced myself that protein powders and all other nutritional supplements were a complete scam and didn’t contribute to growth of muscle what-so-ever!
Oh how wrong I was!
The long and short of my problems had absolutely NOTHING to do with my genetics. It was 100% my story that sabotaged my muscle gain.
If you’d like to find out how I overcame my crappy ectomorph (ultra skinny guy) genetics to gain 21kg of lean muscle in 10 years then look out for my new eBook.
All will be revealed in comprehensive detail in the #performancenutrition eBook.
