Shoulder pain is annoying at best and completely debilitating at worst. When undiagnosed, there's heaps of possible causes. In most cases, when you see a healthcare professional, they only treat the symptom, not the cause.
In my 12 years experience working with corporate professionals, through to athletes, i've found that many acute shoulder pain issues actually start from a tightness, or shortening of the chest , biceps and anterior (front) shoulder muscles.
This shortening of the muscles in the front of the shoulder causes a rounding of the shoulders and/or poor posture ... Resulting in shoulder dysfunction or bad joint synergy.
Because of the extreme mobility in the shoulder we need proper muscular synergy, meaning all muscles are able to operate properly in the correct/optimal position. Especially if you plan to lift above head height, do pull-ups/lat pull downs or swing a golf club.
So where should you start, if you already experience shoulder pain?
I always recommend working with a qualified health care professional who understands the anatomy of the shoulder. If you've torn a muscle or have a serious muscle/tendon or labrum injury then anything could potentially make it worse!
So seek professional advice before doing anything.
However, if you're just starting to experience some discomfort, or you'd like to be pro-active and avoid it altogether, then this simple static hanging exercise is perfect!
