Is the Samsung Galaxy S8 the best smartphone for creatives? Can you make a decent video with it? Whats it like to use? Read Review below: The phone: The Galaxy S8 has a fantastic 12mp camera with great low light functionality - we explored this in our last video with photographer David Rann - it's packed with loads of great features like slow motion, hyperlapse, virtual shot, food and selective focus. The auto and pro modes with HDR cover most things you will find on a DSLR and S8 is capable of shooting 4k, 2k, 1080 60fps, 1080 30 fps and so on downward - the slow motion mode captures at HD720, 240 fps. The project We took the S8 to the Custard Factory in the Digbeth area of Birmingham. The Custard Factory is famous as a hub of creativity and the surrounding streets are industrial, hip and graffiti covered. Lots of opportunity to shot some fun colourful footage. We had no plan in particular - the idea was to go, look around and make a video. A good smartphone test. We secured the permission to film the day before. On the day it was cold, wet and really windy, not ideal conditions, but it is what it is! We used a DJI Osmo to capture clips for context. The conditions Without tripods or physical stabilisation the wind made life really difficult. The optical image stabiliser on the S8 is great for photos but when you have to hold it for any longer than a few seconds it doesn't work so well - especially in great gusts of wind that that batter the phone and your hold on it! The wind made trying to capture any audio a struggle. The footage The quality of the S8 footage was great - rich and detailed, perfect for Instagram or social but you can't shoot in Log, and the standard app has no picture style options. The video is super sharp with high contrast - great for point and shoot, but limited in terms of post production control. The lack of decent stabilisation in the conditions made any clip longer than a second or two wobbly! The edit We edited the video in Final Cut X - traditionally trying to get footage of a Samsung to a mac has never been a speedy process! Using Side Sync made this a lot easier. Side Sync allows you to control your S8 from your mac. You can access all the features of the phone, the apps etc - it even has a presentation mode that allows you to control the phone from your screen. We stabilised all the footage - 50% of what we shot was unusable due to conditions and no tripod etc... We graded the footage using CGC Lut Gallery. The film emulation used was 'FJ Superia 400 Expired Alt' from Rocket Rooster. There were some additional workflow tweaks... The music We wrote the track after the shoot. We thought something 'western' like would be fun, It's Birmingham so a guitar was essential... We wanted something moody, crunchy and thick - we used a lot of the new Steven Slate tube emulations it give it custard! The track is mastered to broadcast -23LUF (European standard). If you like the track let us know and we'll look at making it available to you. Conclusion From start to finish the project took 3 days, it involved lots of coffee, a full moon and a UK election! The S8 is a great camera. The Infinity screen is fantastic. It's easy to use and the footage it shoots is lovely. It would be better if it shot in Log or offered controls to change the picture style. But hat is my only complaint. The lack of audio options is a shame - it would be great if there were more options for using external mics. If you are looking for a new phone to aid your creativity, the S8 is a contender. It's great to use and Side Sync makes connecting it to a mac easy! ......................
